Jackets are hands down one of our favorite things about Fall (trumped only by mugs of warm whiskey cider and handfuls of candy corn). We’ll gladly welcome the excuse to bundle in an extra layer, cozy up and enjoy our favorite fall festivities. All snacking aside, transitional jackets are a wardrobe staple this time of year, and are an easy way to add texture and dimension to your existing wardrobe.
We sought help from Free People’s Fashion Director to outfit us in her favorite Fall jackets for any occasion. We got the scoop on what styles she’s wearing where this season, and what she’s wearing them with. So whether you’re bound for travel this month, exploring the local museums, playing it casual at the farmers market or toasting s’mores at a bonfire, we have a jacket fit for your every adventure.
Check out the Free People jacket style guide, below, and shop for your future favorite Fall jacket, here.
TRAVEL:
The Jacket: AFTERNOON WRAP JACKET
How You’d Style It: a cozy plaid button-up shirt (front tucked-in), cropped dark-denim boyfriend jeans, a leather belt & chunky ankle boots.
Why You’d Style It That Way: I love that this jacket can act like a blanket for flights, or long road trips. I love how the slouchy feeling of the jacket can be played up against the more tailored button up. It gives you great proportion interest and is comfortable and versatile.
MUSEUM/PARK
The Jacket: SLOUCHY BOYFRIEND JACKET
How You’d Style It: With a printed Long-sleeve mini dress, over-the-knee sox, and hiker boots
Why You’d Style It That Way: This jacket has a perfect, slightly oversized cacoon, that doesn’t make you look massive. It looks perfect with mini dresses because the length will be nearly the same. This look it very put-togteher, but a bit irreverent with the flash of leg and the oversized proportions.
FARMERS MARKET
The Jacket: PLAID BELL SLEEVE JACKET
How You’d Style It: with a slouchy turtle neck tee (front tucked-in), cropped trousers, and slide-on Century Gothic
Why You’d Style It That Way: This jacket has so much attitude, so I like keeping the rest of the outfit simple. It feels really current yet comfortable to wear cropped trousers and slides. The slight cowl turtle neck is so cozy and cool for walking around the market and not having to worry too much about your outfit.
BONFIRE
The Jacket: THE FAITHFUL SHAGGY JACKET
How You’d Style It: with an oversized Tee, a statement choker/necklace, cut-off denim shorts & rugged over the knee boots
Why You’d Style It That Way: I love having a super casual ‘boy’ outfit on under such a statement rock-n-roll jacket. I think it’s very interesting to play up a mix of casual & rugged with a flash of glam. A pair of over-the-knee boots would go great with this look because it’s quite sexy to show just a flash of thigh.
